After my corporate role was made redundant I felt very moved to start my own business. I could see the market place shifting and knew that redundancies were going to be an ongoing reality in the corporate sector.
I wanted to create something for myself that was not dependent on having to go to a workplace. My life was changing and I wanted to have flexibility in where I worked, as well as to become more creative in how I worked. With decades of experience in teaching, facilitating and coaching I created a solopreneur business to support people in their ongoing development work.Â
I began my career as a high school teacher, then worked for several small businesses and then moved into corporate life having training roles, then learning and development roles and finally global talent management responsibility.Â
Although part of my studies at university in Northern Ireland were in marketing, within the small businesses that I worked in, I followed the marketing strategies given to me, and in my corporate roles all my marketing efforts were easier because I could leverage the internal networks of the corporation itself. Â
Now as a solopreneur, marketing to the great unknown was new territory for me. I no longer had direct access to the global internal customer base of thousands of people at my fingertips.
I began by looking at how other solopreneur businesses were marketing. I got myself a business coach. I was eager to explore and learn about my marketing options.
What I discovered very quickly was that I was not aligned at all with contemporary methods of what I had to do, and how I should be when it came to marketing. I felt sure there had to be another way as this clearly did not feel the right way for me.Â
It is such a common experience to feel unsure and uncertain about how to market yourself to help build your client base and create a sustainable business model.Â
Know that you are not alone if you are saying to yourself that you don't want to be on social media all the time. What was really helpful for me was to engage in quiet marketing. Â
Over many years I have been part of Dani Gardner’s Quiet Marketing community, exploring and learning ways that work for me. Marketing that allows me to more easily and creatively express my true nature. Â
